Robbert Muuse, Micha van Weers

Julius Röntgen. He was a Dutch-German musician, born in Leipzig. The musical greats of the day were frequent visitors to his parents’ home. His mother was a pianist, his father a violinist with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra who rose to the position of concertmaster. Already at a young age, their son Julius exhibited an unbridled passion for musical composition. He quickly showed himself to be a child prodigy. In 1878, he was offered a job as a piano teacher in Amsterdam. As pianist, conductor, concert organiser and co-founder of the first conservatory there, he was one of the pillars of a developing musical life in the Netherlands. In 1920 he acquired Dutch nationality, and in 1924 he moved with his second family to Bilthoven, near Utrecht. This selection of lieder is from his Dutch period.

From Benjamin Britten he sang the role of Sid in Albert Herring, conducted by Urban Malmberg and staged by renowned director Guy Joosten, and Noah in Noye’s Fludde. Furthermore he performed Filippo in a Dutch translation of Rossini’s La Gazzetta with present Cologne’s Kapellmeister Enrico Delamboye and directors Saskia Boddeke and Peter Greenaway.

As a soloist and interpretator of baroque music he has sung many oratorios and concerts. His interpretation of Bach Matthew’s Passion (arias and Jesus) has been much acclaimed. Also on his repertoire are the great oratorios and concertworks, such as many cantatas and Weihnachtsoratorium by J.S. Bach, Händel’s Belshazzar and Messiah, Haydn’s Die Schöpfung and Die Jahreszeiten, Mendelssohn’s Paulus and Elias, the great Requiems by Mozart, Fauré and Duruflé, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Carmina Burana by Orff, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle and Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs.

Since 2001 he has frequently worked together with the Ensemble Pierre Robert (France), an ensemble that consists generally of three solo-voices, specialised in French baroque music, and directed by Frédéric Desenclos. The repertoire includes works of Brossard, Henry Dumont, Daniel Danielis, Clérembault, M.A. Charpentier, Lully, Couperin and Pierre Robert.

Micha van Weers

The Dutch pianist Micha van Weers is a versatile performer in different facets of chambermusic. As a soloist she has focussed on twentieth-century Czech pianomusic, for which she has lived and studied in Prague. Beside playing solo and together with other instrumentalists, she has a special dedication to accompanying singers in song recitals.

In many reviews she has been praised for her colourful play and great expressivity. She performed concerts, e.g. in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Kassel State Theatre, in Paris, Prague, Stuttgart, Salzburg. She made recordings for radio and television in the Netherlands and abroad; in 2011 her debut-CD was launched with label Challenge Records Int. with songs of Cyril Scott and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

As an accompanist she won several awards, such as the MeesPierson Award 2004 in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Accompanist Award of the Helge Domp Competition; at the Seghizzi Song Competition in Italy she won the special RAI-prize and was the audience favorite, together with baritone Robbert Muuse. After studying piano solo in Maastricht with Tilly Keessen and Tonie Ehlen and in Prague with František Maxián, she specialized as an accompanist of the artsong in her studies with Konrad Richter, Hartmut Höll and Julius Drake. Furthermore she participated in masterclasses with Rudolf Jansen, Graham Johnson and Julius Drake. Besides the familiar, well-known repertoire, Robbert Muuse and Micha van Weers challenge themselves to continuously explore the field of unknown works, forgotten or even forbidden songs that they deem worthy to be re-discovered and performed as new. This research led to their present collection of approximately 80 songs by Cyril Scott, that have unjustly remained unknown to our generation.
